When young Andrew Manson starts work as a doctor he discovers some unpleasant facts about the medical profession. He is shocked to learn that there are doctors who know very little and who do not really care about treating people properly. For many, earning money is much more important than curing or preventing illness. Andrew's aim is to become a good doctor, and at first he works hard to improve the system and to learn as much about medicine as he can. But the system is extremely powerful, and at times he finds it impossible not to become part of it himself.
