What do you
think of England? This is a question you are sure to be
asked if you are a foreign visitor to England, and it is
the one that the people in this anthology have tried to
answer from the 15th century to the present day. As one
of the writers says, "foreigners write endless books
about the British" and this is only a very small
selection. However, it tries to be a fair one and to give
different points of view - although there are certain
subjects, mainly English houses and the English being
"great lovers of themselves", on which writers
seem to be almost unanimous. What is said here is true
from the writer's point of view. But is it really true?
That is a matter for discussion, and anyone who has been
to England will certainly have his or her own point of
view. There is a glossary. |
