The Academic Word List
570 important words in English for upper-intermediate and advanced students who want to read academic texts in English. Very good practice for IELTS candidates.
Work through the sublists 1- 10 looking words up in one of the concordancers and in one of the dictionaries and try the Visual Thesaurus, too.

Simple search of the British National Corpus
to find up to 50 examples of the use of a word or phrase.
Now there are three different ways to find example sentences containing words you are interested in.
If you want to see a a word that interests you in 40 different sentences, try the Cobuid Concordancer and the VLC Web concordancer gives you the original context as well.
